Fabric Facts - Iron-on interlining

WHAT IS (IRON-ON) INTERLINING?

Iron-on interlining or interlining is used to reinforce, stabilize or give structure to fabrics.

Which interlining is needed depends on many factors such as project, fabric type, use, etc.

  • For example, there are Interlining for elastic fabrics to make sewing easier

  • Interfacing to reinforce and stiffen fabrics, e.g. for stiff pockets

  • Iron-on interlining in tape form, for heavily stressed seams

  • Interfacing for sewing on appliqués

Iron-on fabric interlining

fine fabric with adhesive layer that bonds with the fabric through heat

Use/properties:

Often used for clothing. e.g: collars, cuffs, button plackets

Available in the Kattun-Shop:

  • Vlieseline G 700 - lightweight, dimensionally stable, for medium to heavy fabrics, washable up to 60 °C

  • Vlieseline G 710 - light, dimensionally stable, for medium to heavy fabrics, slightly firmer than G700, washable up to 40 °C.

Iron-on fleece interlining

non-woven fiber composite material, with adhesive layer that bonds with the fabric through heat

Use/properties:

Often used for clothing. Small parts and front fixings on blouses/shirts/dresses. Suitable for light fabrics made of silk, viscose, acetate and cupro.

Available from us:

  • Vlieseline H 180: light, soft, ideal for delicate and light fabrics

  • Vlieseline H 200: light, soft, for light fabrics, for small parts such as collars and cuffs on blouses/shirts/jackets.

  • Vlieseline H 250: slightly firmer, for light to medium-weight fabrics, for small parts and details.

  • Vlieseline H 630: voluminous, softly padded, for quilting and quilting work

non-iron fleece interlining

Uses/properties:

Often used for patchwork and quilting, hand quilting, decorative and home projects

Available from us:

  • COTTON BATTING VLIES: 100% cotton, for patchwork and quilting, breathable, warming and absorbs moisture, shrinks by up to 2.5% on the first wash, creating a rather wrinkled texture

  • VLIESELINE THERMOLAM 272: Heavy, soft and compact, sewable, volume fleece made of synthetic fibers with good heat and cold insulation properties, e.g. for potholders, trivets, ironing pads

elastic iron-on interlining

Use/properties:

suitable for stretchy and elastic fabrics

Available from us:

  • VLIESELINE H609: light, bi-elastic, for light to medium-weight elastic fabrics.

  • SEAM TAPE FLEXIBLE T15: lightweight, bi-elastic, seam reinforcement, protects against warping and fraying. Can be easily applied to curves. For light to medium-weight elastic fabrics.

Volume insert

Uses/properties:

is often used for patchwork and quilting with voluminous effects, e.g.: for bedspreads, bags, decorative projects, quilting or warming clothing

  • VLIESELINE 295: light, soft, highly fluffy, sewable volume fleece

  • VLIESELINE FUSIBLE H630: light, soft, fusible volume fleece

  • VLIESELINE P140: medium weight, soft, highly fluffy, warming, sewable volume fleece

  • COTTON BATTING VLIES: 100% cotton, breathable, warming and absorbs moisture, shrinks by up to 2.5% on the first wash, creating a rather wrinkled texture

Uses/properties:

is often used for projects with a 3D effect, for padding protective covers for cell phones and glasses and for stabilizing bags and backpacks

Available from us:

  • VLIESELINE STYLE-VIL FIX: firm, stable, voluminous, covered with knitted fabric on both sides, can be ironed on, made of synthetic materials with high abrasion resistance

Joining layers of fabric

Available from us:

  • VLIESOFIX: adhesive on both sides, is applied by ironing, fixes two layers of fabric in two steps, e.g. appliqués/patches/labels (in the first step, the interlining is ironed onto the back of the appliqué - in the second step, the appliqué can be positioned and fixed), making it easier to sew on

  • SAUMFIX WUNDAWEB: adhesive on both sides, is applied by ironing, fixes two layers of fabric in one step (is placed between two layers of fabric and fixed by ironing) e.g. hems

  • WONDER TAPE: transparent, double-sided adhesive tape for temporary fixing. Washes out without leaving any residue, quick and easy alternative to stapling and pinning - e.g. for hems, zippers
