strong>Muslin fabric is a light and airy fabric that has its origins in prehistoric Bangladesh. Muslin fabrics have been traded all over the world. Since its introduction to Europe in the 16th century, muslin has been a favourite fabric for making clothes because it is light, easy to care for and versatile.

To produce muslin, the cotton must be spun as finely as possible. The humidity in Bangladesh helped with this. Muslin fabric was and is also produced in very fine qualities: to produce 1 metre of muslin fabric, it takes around 10,000 metres of cotton yarn and three weavers need just under two weeks to do this. However, you can hardly buy such fine muslin fabrics any more. Today's machine-made muslin qualities are significantly coarser, but also much more affordable.

Weaving in plain weave creates the creped look that muslin is known for. Typically, muslin consists of one, two or three layers. This gives it its soft and airy properties. Muslin is also known as the fabric used for fashion prototypes to test patterns. At KATTUN you usually get double gauze, i.e. two layers are woven together at certain points.

Most of our muslin fabrics are GOTS certified. GOTS is the best-known standard for sustainably produced cotton worldwide. So when you buy muslin, you can not only be sure that you are buying high-quality fabrics, but also that you are making a contribution to greater sustainability in sewing. GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) certified muslin fabric is monitored for sustainability and fairness from agriculture in cotton cultivation, through production steps such as spinning, weaving and dyeing, to trade and distribution. This means that when you order muslin fabrics with the GOTS seal from KATTUN, you can be sure that you are buying a high-quality and sustainable product.

Processing and care

Muslin can be machine washed with mild detergent. Hand washing is even gentler on muslin fabric. If you want to put the muslin in the tumble dryer (lowest setting), it is an advantage to remove it before it is completely dry. This reduces creasing. Muslin likes to dry flat, but you can also hang it on a clothes horse.
