Fabulous poplin by the metre for your next sewing project

Cotton fabric as woven fabric or poplin can be used universally and is suitable for many sewing projects relating to clothing and decoration. A woven fabric consists of warp threads running lengthwise and weft threads running crosswise. The "warp" and "weft" intersect at right angles. The type of crossing of warp and weft threads is called a woven weave. There are three basic weaves - the plain weave, the twill weave and the satin weave.

Depending on the type of weave and the yarn used, woven fabrics have different properties.

However, they also have things in common, namely

a firm structure, which makes them very robust, tear-resistant and hard-wearing.

Fabrics of this type are generally not stretchy and are suitable for garments such as shirts, blouses, dresses, trousers or decorative items such as cushions and blankets.

However, there are also woven fabrics with elastane content. If elastane is added to the weft threads, the result is a cross-elastic fabric. If the warp thread also contains elastane, the woven fabric is later bi-elastic.

Interesting fact: woven fabric stretches strongly in a diagonal direction (45°)! This is utilised, for example, in the production of bias binding.

In addition, all woven fabrics fray at the cut edges, which means that the fabric dissolves into individual fibres at the edges and individual threads can be pulled out. It is therefore best to always neaten all fabric edges.

Typical cotton fabrics are

Batiste (fine, plain weave fabric made of cotton, linen, wool or cotton/polyester. Used for dresses, blouses, underwear or interlinings)

Denim (hard-wearing cotton fabric in warp twill weave. Originally with yarn-dyed blue warp and white weft (blue denim). For jeans, sportswear, leisurewear and workwear).

Garbadine (Dense fabric with a pronounced steep twill weave. The right side is smooth due to shearing and pressing. Used for suits, costumes and coats).

Calico (A cotton base fabric in plain weave, medium-fine thickness, used e.g. for bed linen, aprons, light summer clothing)

Poplin (plain weave fabric with fine cross ribs, created by a very fine, tightly woven warp and a coarser weft yarn. Used for shirts, blouses, trousers, jackets and coats, depending on the thickness).

Satin (general term for fabrics in satin weave with a smooth surface and supple drape. Used for dresses and blouses, linings and bed linen).

Voile (fabric in plain weave with hard twisted yarns in warp and weft or only in warp. The fabric is translucent and rough to the touch. Used for dresses and blouses).

Flannel (Light to medium-weight fabric in plain or twill weave, slightly roughened on one or both sides. Cotton flannel is used for shirts and underwear.

Cotton fabric or poplin is suitable for skirts, blouses, dresses and trousers. As a cotton fabric, it is characterised by high wearing comfort, is soft, absorbent and breathable. Poplin can also be used to create decorative items for the home and furnishings. Cushions, covers, bed linen, curtains, tablecloths, napkins and much more are suitable do-it-yourself projects for cotton fabric.

Processing and care tips for cotton fabrics

1. always pre-wash or steam! Woven fabrics can shrink.

2. iron, iron, iron! A creased fabric can never be cut and sewn precisely.

3. cut with rotary cutter or tailor's scissors.

4 It is best to mark with tailor's chalk or magic marker.

5. add sufficient seam allowance. This prevents the fabric from pulling into the sewing machine when sewing.

6 Finish the fabric edges with the overlock or a zigzag stitch.

7 Sew with a normal sewing machine.

8. use a needle that matches the fabric when sewing.

9. always sew necklines with a facing. Reinforce this if necessary to prevent the fabric from warping.
